Apple has always been known to revolutionize the digital world through its many technological advancements, the latest of which is Apple Pay. This mobile payment service allows you to make contactless payments using your iPhone.
Available in more than 24 countries around the world, Apple Pay has been extra beneficial these days with contactless and cashless payments being promoted to avoid spreading the virus. Here’s how to use your Apple Pay on iPhone:
- Setting up Apple Pay
To set up Apple Pay, you need an iOS 8.1 or later version, after which you can set up this system using the Wallet App. Add your credit or debit card on Apple Pay by simply tapping the “+” icon in Wallet. You can also set up Apple Pay by just following the prompts when you’re setting up your new iPhone or iPad.
- Paying in stores
To be able to pay in stores, you need to find two icons that signify that a store accepts Apple Pay payments. In Japan, contactless readers like iD, QuicPay, Suica and PASMO also accept Apple Pay, and you can always ask Siri for stores near you that take this form of payment.
Paying with Face ID
- Double-click the side button on your phone and enter your passcode or authenticate with Face ID.
- Hold the top of your device near the contactless reader in the store until you see Done and a checkmark on the screen.
Paying with Touch ID
- Rest your finger on Touch ID to authenticate your device.
- Hold the top of your device near the contactless reader in the store until you see Done and a checkmark on the screen.
Paying with Apple Watch
- Double-click the side button and hold the display near the contactless reader until you feel a gentle tap.
- Paying within apps
To use Apple Pay to pay for apps or within apps, you need to:
- Choose Apple Pay as your preferred payment method.
- Double check your billing, shipping and contact information, and see if you’re using the right card.
- Confirm your payment by checking to see if there’s a checkmark and Done on the screen.
- Paying online
If you’re shopping through a website or in Safari, here’s how to use Apple Pay:
- Tap the Apple Pay button and verify your billing, shipping and contact information.
- When you’re ready to check out, simply choose Apple Pay as your preferred payment method on the website and wait for the Done and checkmark on your screen to confirm the successful transaction.
- Using a rewards card
There are stores both online and offline that offer rewards when you use Apple Pay and you can add those to your rewards card in your Wallet to redeem later. You can set up your rewards card to appear automatically in a store by simple tapping it and turning on Automatic Selection.
Once you use your rewards card, the system instantly switches back to your default payment card to pay for your purchase. The use of your rewards card will depend on the store’s policy. While some stores will instantly apply your rewards and process your payment card in one step, others would require you to do it manually.
- Paying for public transport
You can also use Apple Pay to pay for public transport when travelling to some countries and regions, so you won’t have to constantly purchase transport cards or line up in long queues just to process your payments when you’re travelling around the world.
Paying with Express Travel mode
In some countries, you may be able to use Apple Pay to pay for your public transport by setting up a travel or payment card in your Wallet to use with Express Travel mode. Do your research to know what transport agency supports Apple Pay in the country that you’re visiting.
Paying without Express Travel mode
If you’re not using Express Travel mode, you need to authenticate every payment for public transport at the gate or terminal using a passcode, Face ID or Touch ID. Learn about the ways where you can pay for public transport using Apple Pay in the countries that you’re travelling to.
